About AI Cost Calculator

AI Cost Calculator is an independent collection of free planning tools for APIs, agents, chatbots, RAG systems, coding assistants, and AI SaaS products. It began with a simple frustration: a token-price multiplication looks precise, but it leaves out many of the things that turn up on a real project.

Retries happen. Agents call several tools. Chatbots carry conversation history. RAG adds retrieved context. Some outputs need a person to review them. Those details are not footnotes when you are trying to set a budget or decide whether a feature is worth building.

What the site does

Each calculator turns your expected usage into a detailed estimate: the monthly cost, the cost per unit, a model-by-model comparison, optimisation tips, and, where it applies, the ROI and break-even point. Everything runs in your browser, and there is no account to create.

How estimates are calculated

We maintain a pricing database sourced from official provider pricing pages and apply transparent formulas documented on our methodology page. Token counts use standard heuristics. All outputs are planning estimates, not quotes.

How often pricing is updated

AI prices change frequently. We review provider pricing periodically and stamp each pricing update with a "last updated" date. See data sources for the providers we track and their official links.

What a useful estimate looks like

We do not think a useful estimate is a single dramatic total. It should show where the money goes, which assumptions matter, what changes when usage is higher or lower than expected, and where you are still guessing. That is why the calculators expose inputs such as retries, cache hits, human review, conversation length, and utilization instead of hiding them behind a preset.

The defaults are starting points. The best results come from replacing them with measurements from your own prototype or production logs. If you can explain the unit cost of one successful task, the monthly budget becomes much easier to defend.

Why you can trust these numbers

We would rather you check an estimate than take it on faith, so the whole site is built to be verified. Every formula a calculator uses is written out in plain terms on the methodology page, and every price is traceable to an official provider source with the date we last reviewed it on the data sources page.

The calculators also refuse to hide the costs a plain token-times-price sum leaves out: retries, cached tokens, tool round-trips, conversation history and human review each get their own input. Any result on the site can be reproduced by hand from the assumptions shown on screen, and when one cannot be, we treat that as a bug to fix rather than a number to defend. Prices are re-checked on a regular cadence and stamped with a "last updated" date, and we publish corrections promptly when a provider changes a rate or we get something wrong.

How we approach comparisons

Provider and model comparisons are based on the numbers entered and the pricing data we maintain. They are not paid rankings. A low price does not automatically make a model the right choice; quality, reliability, latency, privacy, and operational fit all matter. Our guides try to make that judgment visible rather than pretending a table can settle it.

Independence and advertising

AI Cost Calculator is not owned by or affiliated with the model providers it mentions. Provider names and trademarks are used to identify the products being compared. The Site may use advertising to support free access, but advertising does not change formulas or comparison results. Details are in the Advertising Policy.

Corrections are welcome

Pricing databases age quickly. If a provider changes a rate, renames a model, or publishes a condition we missed, send the official source and the affected page. We would rather correct a clear mistake than defend an old number. The same applies to calculator behavior: a reproducible example is genuinely helpful.
